About
MDCollections is an iOS app for cataloging physical collections in Markdown files you control. It works especially well alongside Obsidian, but it is also useful on its own.
Why it exists
The app came from a simple problem: Markdown and Obsidian were already great for organizing notes, but manually cataloging physical collections on a phone was too slow.
The goal was not to replace plain-text ownership or note-based systems. The goal was to make the collection-specific workflow faster: add the item, scan the barcode, attach photos, assign a storage location, and save the result as a Markdown file.
How it fits with Obsidian
For many people, the best setup is not MDCollections instead of Obsidian. It is MDCollections plus Obsidian.
MDCollections is strongest when you want:
- faster mobile capture
- barcode lookup
- image and document handling
- storage locations and QR labels
- structured properties for collection items
Obsidian remains a great place to browse, extend, cross-link, and work with the resulting Markdown files.
Product direction
MDCollections is intentionally simple in a few ways:
- your files stay yours
- the app works with plain Markdown
- the workflow is built around real-world collections, not generic databases
- features are chosen based on faster capture and easier retrieval later
That is why the app focuses on things like barcodes, images, storage locations, custom views, and flexible metadata instead of pushing people into a proprietary system.
